Our Story
Ubuntu Ways takes its name — and its work — from a philosophy shared across Burundi and Southern Africa: umuntu n'uwundi, a person is a person through other people. We exist because families who cross a border shouldn't have to face what comes next alone.
Where We Started
Ubuntu Ways began close to the ground — among rice fields and maize rows in Burundi, where families have always leaned on each other to bring in a harvest. As more of those same families sent sons, daughters, and parents to South Africa in search of work, the distance started to strain something ubuntu was never meant to break: the bond between people who belong to each other.
So we built a bridge. An office in South Africa to stand with Burundians settling into a new country, and a continued presence in Burundi to keep the family, and the farm, and the future intact on the other end.
What Drives Us
To walk alongside Burundian families in South Africa with practical wellness support and skills that generate real income — while keeping their households at home strong, connected, and provided for.
A generation of Burundian families who are self-reliant on both sides of the border — earning with dignity in South Africa, and building lasting wealth for the children who come after them.
Ubuntu — we rise together. Hard work with lasting purpose, not just a quick wage. And a hand held out first to those who are most often overlooked.
How We Work
We don't separate "helping people settle" from "helping them earn" from "helping their money get home safely" — for the families we serve, these are one and the same need. That's why Ubuntu Ways operates as three connected efforts under one roof:
